Most people know Chris Rewired for poetry, music and writing, but apparently the creative wiring was already there long before any of that.
I made this piece in Year 7 at school as my own take on the work of L. S. Lowry. I was fascinated by his matchstick people and the way he could make an ordinary scene feel absolutely packed with life, so I had a go at creating my own version.
Looking at it now, there are wonky lines, questionable perspective, people all over the shop and absolutely no shortage of colour. Basically, twelve year old me had artistic confidence even if he had absolutely no idea what he was doing 😂
I kept it though, and all these years later it has become a little piece of my own creative history.

Rather than trying to copy one particular Lowry painting, I took the things I remembered most about his work and made them my own. A big central structure, small figures going about their lives, trees, birds and little details scattered everywhere.
It is rough, colourful and very obviously made by a kid, which is exactly why I still love it.
There is another bit of history in the photograph too.
The battered looking teddy next to the painting is Candy, my first teddy from when I was a baby. Candy is an original Andrex puppy and has somehow survived my entire life.
So the picture now contains two things from completely different points in my childhood that somehow made it all the way to forty year old me.
The painting probably would not win the Turner Prize, and Candy has definitely seen better days, but I would not replace either of them.
